whatsapp ios iconThere has been a bunch of fuss over the last few days about WhatsApp’s new payment options. According to Spanish blog, Applesfera, the company could be bringing its yearly subscription fee to iOS.

This comes after a translator for WhatsApp received an email about a possible subscription fee coming to iOS. Currently, Android users already have this yearly subscription fee. The app itself is free on Android but once launched, users will be alerted that the first year of service is free but subsequent years will cost $0.99. This is different from what’s currently available in Apple’s App Store as WhatsApp costs $0.99. This one time fee gives users a lifetime of service from WhatsApp.

Having a subscription model makes sense for WhatsApp as it generates a steady stream of income. Many game developers have realized this and have added microtransactions to its free-to-play games. Crytek has announced that all of its games will be free-to-play with microtransactions.

At this point, in-app purchases for WhatsApp is purely speculation and only time will reveal whether the multi-platform chat client will go subscription based on iOS.
