It has taken 8 seasons and 144 episodes, but one of the most beloved series on television will finally have a spin-off

It is curious that a series titled The Rookie (or El Novato) has a protagonist who, 8 seasons later, is still in the game. However, despite the rumors, it doesn’t seem that Nathan Fillion has any interest in leaving a series that gives him almost a civil servant status: 18 episodes per season, success on broadcast and streaming, recognition and the pleasure of knowing that there will never be surprises. Or maybe they were saving one up their sleeve?
Let’s Travel to the North
We already knew that The Rookie: North was in the process of filming the pilot, but we finally have confirmation: ABC has requested that they continue and make a full season of ten episodes, with the intention of being able to do crossovers with its parent series. In fact, it is already said that in the pilot of that one, Fillion will be doing his thing, so it’s only a matter of time before they set up a Rookie-verse.
The curious thing is that this series will not be a spin-off per se, but will introduce a new character, Alex Holland, played by Jay Ellis, who follows the same journey as his counterpart in The Rookie: a middle-aged man who discovers his late vocation and must prove to the world what he is worth with a gun in hand. Hopefully, it will have more success than the spin-off that aired (and failed) in 2022, The Rookie: Feds. Back then, it disappointed everyone, but stories are meant to be changed, right?
If it blows up, then you know what comes next: just like Law and Order, a bunch of spin-offs and sequel series for all tastes. It’s the market, my friend: If something is liked, you have to funnel it down and shove it down their throats! We’re not exactly in a position to waste or worry about art.
