General Hospital is one of the longest running series on American television. With over sixty years on the air and more than 15,000 episodes, there is no doubt that it is television history both in the United States and around the world. That makes many of its actors known practically only for their appearances here, and establishes a great bond with the public.

Now, the series has just lost Jacklyn Zeman, a veteran actress on the show who played the role of nurse Bobbie Spencer for 45 years. Zeman has died at the age of 70 and after a lifetime devoted to General Hospital. The announcement of her death was made by the series’ executive producer, Frank Valentini.

A myth of American television

“On behalf of our General Hospital family, I am heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Jackie Zeman. Just like her character, the legendary Bobbie Spencer, she was a shining light and a true professional who brought a lot of positive energy to her work,” Valentini wrote in the statement announcing the performer’s death.

Although not many details have been released about her condition, it was known that Zeman had been battling cancer for years, and it would have ultimately been the final cause of her death. “Jackie will be greatly missed, but her positive spirit will live on in our cast and crew. We send our deepest condolences to her loved ones, friends and family, especially her daughters, Cassidy and Lacey,” continued Frank Valentini.

The series’ official account also released a statement on the actress’ death, highlighting her great work for more than four decades: “Jacklyn Zeman has been a beloved member of the General Hospital and ABC family since she originated the iconic role of Bobbie Spencer more than 45 years ago. She leaves a lasting legacy for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of the bad girl turned heroine. She will always be remembered for her kind heart and radiant spirit.” She will undoubtedly be missed by fans of the series.
