James Bond could have had a darker version, but Amazon did not agree with the vision

Amazon MGM Studios is currently in the casting process to select the next James Bond, and among the names being considered are Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson. This competitive process, which some might describe as worthy of an action movie, reflects the new management’s commitment to revitalizing the iconic 007 franchise under the direction of Denis Villeneuve.

However, while these young actors compete for the coveted license to kill, the franchise’s past reminds us of missed opportunities. Matthew Goode, known for his roles in films like Stoker, Watchmen, and The Imitation Game, revealed on the podcast Happy, Sad, Confused that his meeting with Barbara Broccoli, the former head of the franchise, in 2006 was not well received due to the intensity of his pitch for a darker and nihilistic Bond.

Goode had presented a vision of the character that aimed to return to Ian Fleming’s literary roots, proposing a psychological and dark approach that, according to him, would offer a new dimension to the secret agent. However, the lack of some crucial details in his presentation likely played a role in his failure to secure the role. Following his meeting, the path was cleared for Daniel Craig to take on the iconic role, marking the beginning of one of the most acclaimed eras of Bond, with Casino Royale as the catalyst for this change.

With the return to the search for the next 007, speculations about the new approach the franchise will take have begun to circulate. Although there are no confirmations about the style the next actor will assume, rumors suggest that Amazon is looking for a character that not only fits the established molds but also offers a fresh and contemporary narrative.
