James Cameron acknowledges that he was close to making 'Wicked', but in the end, he didn't find a way to do it

James Cameron, renowned film director and three-time Oscar winner, revealed in a recent interview that he was close to directing the film adaptation of the famous musical Wicked. This show, based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, has become a phenomenon since its Broadway debut in 2003, winning several Tony Awards and attracting the attention of millions of fans around the world.

During his participation in the podcast The Town with Matt Belloni, Cameron mentioned that he met with Universal Pictures to discuss his vision for the project, although his plans did not materialize. “I couldn’t find the song”, Cameron joked, referring to the difficulty he faced in connecting with the musical material, but he did not rule out the possibility of venturing into the musical genre in his future career. “My favorite movie is a musical, The Wizard of Oz”, he added, highlighting his admiration for the classic.

As the film industry has transformed into a space where major releases must be seen as events, Cameron points out that it is essential to attract audiences to theaters to justify the high budgets that studios invest. His mention of Wicked underscores the relevance of this type of musical adaptation in the current cinematic landscape.

Cameron also mentioned that many actresses were considered for the lead roles in his vision of Wicked, including Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore, Claire Danes, and Michelle Pfeiffer, among others. Although he ultimately did not take on the direction, his interest highlights the enduring appeal of the story and its potential to captivate audiences on the big screen.
