Jean-Claude Van Damme has revealed controversial details about his career and personal experiences in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. One of the most controversial moments he shared was his participation in a staged fight with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a fact that has fueled rumors and memes on the internet. According to the actor, during this private event, he approached his bag to take out lip balm, which caused alarm among the numerous security agents surrounding him, who feared that Van Damme was reaching for a weapon.
A conflict less serious than it has always been sold
In addition, the protagonist of Bloodsport addressed his departure from the filming of Predator in 1987. Contrary to the extravagant versions that have circulated, the actor confirmed that his problems were caused by the uncomfortable monster suit, which limited his mobility and made it difficult for him to breathe. Van Damme expressed that, seeing the danger he was in while jumping in that outfit, he chose to leave the film, which led to his replacement in the role.
Referring to his movie that catapulted him to fame, Bloodsport, Van Damme admitted that the first cut of the film was “horrendous.” According to the actor, after reviewing the material, he teamed up with screenwriter Sheldon Lettich and editor Carl Kress to re-edit the film, thus achieving a theatrical release instead of being released directly on video, as had been initially planned.
On the other hand, he denied the rumor that in Human Target there was a camera dedicated exclusively to filming his muscles and, in relation to Street Fighter, he neither confirmed nor denied a specific incident, claiming not to remember the details. The stories of his career continue to generate interest and debate among action movie fans, and Van Damme seems ready to share more anecdotes from his years in the industry.
