Ana de Armas is making a strong case for herself as one of the actresses of the moment, and also as one of those who best masters action. After appearing in No Time to Die as a Bond girl, the actress has starred in Ghosted and will soon enter the John Wick saga with Ballerina.
Before her, however, many other actresses have shown the way forward as an action heroine, and one of those who is not about to give up this position is Jennifer Lopez. In a film career spanning more than 25 years, JLO has appeared in everything from romantic gangster thrillers like Out of Sight to revenge movies like Enough. However, she has never before placed herself at the center of a B-movie as raw and ruthless as The Mother.
What’s The Mother about?
The recently released film on Netflix presents a typical action thriller with a minimalist script and essentially formulaic plot. Nevertheless, as a Netflix action movie, it exhibits a certain degree of ambition in its blend of pulp elements. Additionally, it features a mesmerizing performance from JLO.
The actress and singer portrays a former sniper turned clandestine arms dealer intermediary. She is also an FBI informant and the protector of her 12-year-old daughter. The film combines action, torture, and exaggerated dramatic scenes with a slightly over-the-top tone. However, despite this, Lopez is able to impose her style and personality in her performance.

The Netflix film shows Lopez having to protect his daughter Zoe (Lucy Paez) from her past enemies, who want to use her as bait to lure Lopez out of hiding. Sort of a cross between Kill Bill and The Last of Us that shows it’s best not to mess with Ben Affleck’s current wife.
Despite its complicated and forgettable plot, director Niki Caro keeps the focus on the obsession of making a heroine out of Lopez, who plays a character who has had to hide for 12 years and protect her daughter in a cabin in the Alaskan mountains. Despite its limitations, the film is entertaining, but it doesn’t do justice to Lopez’s performance.
