Kingdom Hearts anime is official: Disney+ and Disney Channel announce it

At D23, Disney confirmed that Kingdom Hearts is getting an anime series for Disney Channel and Disney+.

According to Disney, the show will tell a completely new story built with Square Enix, not just rework the games scene for scene. Tetsuya Nomura is reportedly deeply involved, which should help keep the tone, look, and famously tangled lore in line with what longtime fans expect, while still giving the series room to introduce new characters, revisit familiar Disney worlds from a different angle, and maybe even lay groundwork for future games.

If you’ve kept up with Kingdom Hearts, there’s a real reason to pay attention here. The series first launched in 2002, and Square Enix says it’s sold more than 38 million copies worldwide. Disney already treats Kingdom Hearts as a billion-dollar retail franchise, so pushing it further into streaming, television, and merchandise isn’t surprising. It also gives them a chance to fill in story gaps before Kingdom Hearts IV, which Square Enix currently has lined up for late 2027.

Disney also premiered a new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer at the same event, and Square Enix used the moment to announce Kingdom Hearts Collection [I ~ III], set for October 8, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

You’ll be able to watch the anime on Disney Channel and Disney+, though Disney still hasn’t named the studio, revealed the voice cast, confirmed an episode count, or given a firm release date beyond saying that the Kingdom Hearts anime is coming soon.
