The phenomenon of animated cinema has taken a new direction with the overwhelming success of KPop Demon Hunters, which has become the most-watched original movie on Netflix, reaching the extraordinary figure of 500 million views before 2025. This movie follows the story of a group of girls, known as Huntr/x, who use their powerful singing to protect the world from demonic entities. With public interest constantly rising, expectations for future installments are high.
A movie with a very different tone
The popularity of the movie has led Netflix to quickly announce a second installment, KPop Demon Hunters 2, although its release is not expected until 2029. Currently, discussions about possible expansions of the narrative have been driven by proposals from characters involved in the production, such as actress Ji-young Yoo. Yoo has suggested creating a prequel set in Korea during the Japanese occupation, an approach that could offer a significant dramatic twist in the franchise’s story.
“I am fascinated by the period from the late 19th century to 1945, during the Japanese occupation of Korea,” Yoo commented. I think it would be a very serious movie; I don’t know if it would fit into a family framework, but I would be very attentive to that era of KPop Demon Hunters. This idea not only resonates with the movie’s followers, but it could also attract audiences interested in the rich Korean culture, represented in the film through elements like Pansori, a traditional musical style that adds invaluable cultural context to the narrative.
As fans eagerly await more news about KPop Demon Hunters, the series continues to attract attention on digital platforms, and its impact on pop culture is expected to persist for years to come.
