Kylo Ren was about to have a worthy ending in Star Wars, but Disney decided it was a bad idea

Lucasfilm, known for its wide range of projects related to the Star Wars saga, has faced the cancellation of several initiatives, including an ambitious sequel film to the last trilogy that never made it to production. One of the most notable projects was developed by Adam Driver, who, along with director Steven Soderbergh, created a script titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, which aimed to continue the story of the character Kylo Ren.

Driver, dissatisfied with his character’s fate in The Rise of Skywalker, believed that Kylo had “unfinished business”. His proposal caught the attention of the top management at Lucasfilm, including Kathleen Kennedy, as well as Dave Filoni. After the presentation, the itinerary seemed promising; the script was enriched with the collaboration of screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. However, the project stalled when it reached the ears of Disney CEO Bob Iger, who expressed doubts about the viability of reviving Ben Solo after his death.

The narrative of Star Wars, which has allowed the return of characters previously considered dead, leaves open the possibility of continuing Kylo Ren’s story in other formats. However, the decision to discard him has sparked a debate among fans, who tend to have high expectations and long for stories that do not see the light. Iger has expressed a clear intention to distance himself from the legacy of the recent trilogy, which may have influenced his refusal, despite the fact that the Star Wars universe has shown considerable flexibility in terms of plot.

Soderbergh himself lamented that fans cannot experience the vision that he and Driver had conceived. This reminds us that often, the most captivating stories reside in the collective imagination more than on the screen, where creative potential can shine without the limitations of production.
