Evil tongues say that to know how a generation of consoles is doing you only have to see how many racing games have been released. Especially those games designed for family play.

Developed by veteran studio Visual Concepts, Lego 2K Drive is essentially Burnout Paradise mixed with Lego City Undercover, a non-stop open-world driving game that offers four environments to race through, all filled with Lego buildings, sneaking minifigs and, of course, plenty of wacky vehicles.

Ever-changing cars and circuits… just like Lego cars

In an ingenious play on the infinite remodelling capacity of Lego models, your vehicle can transform instantly, so tracks switch quickly between on-road, off-road and water sections. There are even jetpacks.

Career mode puts you in the tireless boots of a rookie driver who competes in a series of competitions to finally win the golden Sky Cup trophy.

Each of the locations offers a world full of mini quests and driving challenges, and among the competitions on the tracks you can choose, for example, to fight armies of skeletons, destroy invading robots, deliver flowers to a character’s crush or see how far you can jump from a mountain ledge.

Wherever you drive, there’s a small task or challenge to discover; most are fun and pleasantly silly.

A Lego 2K Drive that wants to be Mario Kart

The racing strives to be Mario Kart. The handling focuses on drifting, while speeding past power-up icons gives you access to an array of weapons ranging from missiles to spider webs that cover your opponents’ windshields.

As in the Nintendo series, there is nothing but madness on the track. The rivals are never more than one kart away from you, even when you follow the perfect line and avoid all the dangers.

At the same time, when you’re out of the race, you’re back in contention for first place in a matter of seconds. But this is fine, as the target audience of younger children will enjoy the thrill of constant competition, regardless of how well or poorly they play.
