LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian lands on Disney+ on September 2

Disney+ has announced LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a family-focused special that brings Din Djarin and Grogu back on September 2. It retells the first three seasons in a brisk, joke-heavy LEGO format, rather than moving the live-action story forward.

That timing isn’t random. LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian arrives a few months after The Mandalorian and Grogu opened in May and made about $345 million worldwide against a reported $165 million budget, which makes The Mandalorian and Grogu the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie so far.

Disney says The Mandalorian and Grogu still gave merchandise, parks, and related games a boost, even though it fell short of box office expectations.

So if you were waiting for news on The Mandalorian season 4, you won’t get it here. LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian doesn’t offer any update, even though a fourth season is reportedly written and Disney and Lucasfilm still haven’t confirmed a return.

And the soft run of The Mandalorian and Grogu has kept two familiar concerns in the mix: franchise fatigue, and whether streaming hits can always make the jump to theaters.
