LINE tops 200 million users worldwide

Free messaging and calling app LINE has announced it has got over 200 million users since its launch in June 2011. The app is notable for introducing stickers to the world of messaging, a phenomenon that has now been added to Facebook chat.

LINE has doubled its user base from 100 million since January this year, so it’s clearly growing really quickly. However, LINE is counting ‘users’ as ‘downloads’, which might not be the same thing – one user might have downloaded the app more than once, and downloading an app is not the same thing as using it.

Much of LINE’s success has been in Southeast Asia and Latin America, but the combination of still being free (unlike WhatsApp) and having stickers (unlike WhatsApp) gives it plenty of opportunity for global growth.
