LinkedIn is branching out to attract high school students to its professional social network. Teenagers from the age of 13 will be able to join from September, with LinkedIn encouraging them to use the site as a way to plan their future careers.

A new feature, University Pages is being designed to act as both a hub for alumni, and a way for Universities to advertise themselves to potential students. Opening up to high school kids means they can use the site like a careers guide, LinkedIn hopes. The University Pages will allow you to see famous alumni, so you can try to follow in the footsteps of your favorite CEO.

LinkedIn already has many students and recent graduates in its network, but this is the first time they have targeted a young audience. Whether the company can make itself cool to a generation who are apparently falling out of love with Facebook is another matter. Talking to CNET, Director of Product Management Christina Allen says ‘kids today are pretty serious about their careers’, but the social networks favored by teenagers are usually the fun ones – Facebook is started to look stuffy and full of ‘old people’ according to some teenagers, and LinkedIn might have trouble convincing high school kids it’s a cool place to be.

LinkedIn will open its doors to high school students on September 12.
