Locke & Key on Netflix: the Stephen King-meets-J.K. Rowling horror series

Locke & Key ran for three seasons on Netflix and actually finished the story, with its final season landing in August 2022. Critics often pitched it as “Stephen King meets J.K. Rowling,” which is a pretty fair shorthand for what it’s doing: horror-fantasy, a magic system with clear rules, and a world that knows exactly how its supernatural pieces fit together.

So if what you want is a Netflix series with horror and a clearly defined magical system, this is a much better fit than The Innocents. That show only lasted one season. Locke & Key got three, and more importantly, it got a real ending instead of stopping halfway through the story.

The series follows Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke after their father is murdered. They move to Keyhouse with their mother, start finding keys that each carry their own supernatural power, and then learn those powers come with consequences, some of them genuinely unsettling. Before long, it becomes clear that something malevolent is after them. That setup gives the show its mix of haunted-house mystery, coming-of-age fantasy, and family drama shaped by grief.

If you’re after a finished binge with magic, monsters, and real family stakes, Locke & Key is an easy pick. It’s adapted from Joe Hill’s comics, so you get that Stephen King-adjacent mix of damaged-family horror and small-town evil, while the Rowling comparison mostly comes from how clearly the magic is laid out. When it premiered in February 2020, it hit the top of TV Time’s rising chart. Season 1 sits at 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally liked the combination, even if some thought Netflix sanded down the darker edges of the comics, and the show never turned into a massive long-term hit.
