The phenomenon of collectible cards continues unabated. It seems there is no end, with a new major contender emerging every few months, while the older ones continue to assert their dominance with increasingly wild collections and collaborations. Meanwhile, the first collectible card games to hit the market in the last couple of years seem to be firmly establishing themselves. This is the case with Disney Lorcana.

Soon their new collection will arrive in stores, one with a very wintry character, named Winterspell. And in it we can expect three things: familiar characters, feeling very cold, and continuing to expand both the lore and the mechanics of the game.

Elsa is the protagonist of the collection

As the name of the collection itself suggests, winter is the protagonist. And indeed, an ice spell cast by a glimmer of Elsa has gone out of control, covering the entire kingdom in snow with no way to undo the spell. As is common in the universe of Lorcana, to solve this predicament, Disney characters will have to navigate through a series of magical events and challenges to manage to break this insidious spell, which serves as the backdrop for this collection not suitable for the faint of heart.

Given its importance in history, one of the characters we can most expect to see in the collection is Elsa. With multiple versions in different cards, representing different moments in the history of the expansion, she is the great inclusion of the collection for the Lorcana universe. Although logically, along with her, other characters from Frozen, such as Anna or Olaf, will be included to delight fans of one of the most popular franchises, if not the most popular franchise, of Disney in the last 20 years.

For those who do not enjoy so much snow and so many songs about letting go, there are also other never-before-seen appearances. The series Lilo & Stitch is represented, with the character Angel making her debut in the game Darkwing Duck, the Batman of Disney characters and ducks, and the biggest inclusion of all: the characters from Pocahontas arrive in the Lorcana universe as the other main protagonists of the story along with Elsa and the characters from Frozen, creating an interesting contrast of temperatures.

Moreover, the entire collection aims to highlight this wintry character. With characters and arts inspired by Mickey’s Christmas Carol, the bulk of the collection has a Christmas character that gives it a special and distinctive touch compared to previous collections.

In terms of gameplay, the collection is exactly what its players would expect from it. With over 200 new cards, which in itself opens up a new field of possibilities, the aim has been to achieve greater integration of locations and cards that interact with the game board. This, in principle, would favor players creating more decks with thematic synergies, although that is something that remains to be seen. What is done in design and the players’ reactions do not have to align perfectly.

If you’re interested in getting Winterspell from Lorcana, you’ll still have to wait a bit. Its release is scheduled for February 20, with a pre-launch in specialty stores on February 13. And whether you’re a big fan of the Lorcana game, or the Frozen cards catch your eye because you’re a big fan of the movie, you better mark the date, because the cards are sure to fly off the shelves and you won’t want to let it go
