Luminetta unveiled: BMW-backed students build a solar EV for daily commuting

Clemson University’s Deep Orange 17 team unveiled Luminetta today with backing from BMW, showing off a proof-of-concept solar-powered two-seat EV designed to produce more energy than a typical 12-mile daily commute would use.

Clemson says the prototype’s 1,700 solar cells can generate enough energy for about 31 miles of driving per day. In the right conditions, that makes Luminetta energy-positive.

Clemson approached the whole car as an efficiency project. Weight was cut to 1,212 pounds using steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, and 3D-printed metal joints, according to the university, so the solar power it collects can take the car farther.

According to Clemson, the body was shaped around two goals: airflow and solar collection. Its boxfish-inspired design improves aerodynamics while also creating more surface area, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems helped develop cells that can still generate power in shaded conditions.

For anyone paying attention to short-distance EV commuting, this is worth watching even if Luminetta is only a feasibility demo. The project shows that solar commuting can work when you pair very low weight with strong aerodynamics and daily driving distances that people actually do. The harder part is turning that into a profitable mainstream product, and companies like Sono Motors and Lightyear show exactly how tough that is.

You can’t buy Luminetta. The Clemson University project is a proof of concept, not a showroom-ready car.
