Upcoming macOS Sonoma Update Leaves Old Mail App Plugins Unsupported: What to Do Next

macOS Sonoma, the latest version of Apple’s operating system, has introduced a number of truly useful updates. And like all updates, it also leaves behind some features. In this case, we’re talking about the end of support for old plugins in the Mail app, which can affect the functionality of certain third-party applications.
New system and upgrades on the way
In macOS Sonoma, Apple has changed the way plugins are managed in Mail. This change was confirmed by the company during the WWDC 2023 lab sessions. However, this change doesn’t mean the end of extensions for Apple’s Mail app. What it means is that from now on, the only way to create extensions for the app will be through the use of the MailKit API, which was introduced alongside macOS Monterey.
The MailKit API provides enhanced layers of security, which is good news for the privacy of our emails, but it is also more restrictive compared to the old plugins. However, it’s important to note that macOS Sonoma has just begun its journey in the form of a beta release, and it has already made a positive impression. This is done precisely to give developers time to adapt their applications to the new system.

It is likely that we will have to wait for an update to be released in order to continue using the plugins once we install macOS Sonoma on our Mac.
