macOS Sonoma, the latest version of Apple’s operating system, has introduced a number of truly useful updates. And like all updates, it also leaves behind some features. In this case, we’re talking about the end of support for old plugins in the Mail app, which can affect the functionality of certain third-party applications.
New system and upgrades on the way
In macOS Sonoma, Apple has changed the way plugins are managed in Mail. This change was confirmed by the company during the WWDC 2023 lab sessions. However, this change doesn’t mean the end of extensions for Apple’s Mail app. What it means is that from now on, the only way to create extensions for the app will be through the use of the MailKit API, which was introduced alongside macOS Monterey.
The MailKit API provides enhanced layers of security, which is good news for the privacy of our emails, but it is also more restrictive compared to the old plugins. However, it’s important to note that macOS Sonoma has just begun its journey in the form of a beta release, and it has already made a positive impression. This is done precisely to give developers time to adapt their applications to the new system.
Therefore, if we are using any plugins for the Mail app, it is expected that they will be updated to support the new macOS Sonoma before its official launch in the fall. Depending on the situation, we can also check the developer’s website for more information on plugin support.
It is likely that we will have to wait for an update to be released in order to continue using the plugins once we install macOS Sonoma on our Mac. It is important to understand that this change represents another step by Apple towards security and standardization of applications. While it may present an initial challenge for developers, it is ultimately good news for the system, users, and our privacy.
