Marvel announces that Spider-Man’s most controversial story will get a sequel, but fans aren’t going to like it one bit

I remember clearly the first time I read One More Day in the Spider-Man comics. It was 2008 and, although I’d heard about how controversial it was, I had no idea how much. In it, in case you skipped it at the time, Peter makes a deal with Mephisto and decides that his Aunt May would live in exchange for no one knowing his secret identity and, on top of that, for breaking off his marriage to Mary Jane. And so it was: Marvel’s ideal couple never got married, and that’s how it’s stayed -alas- to this very day. Or not?

One Day More

After years of back and forth, giving Mary Jane a new boyfriend nobody liked, and discovering what could have been the perfect version of the couple in Ultimate Spider-Man, Joe Quesada has now announced that he wants to return to that story… but not to undo it. “I don’t know if Spider-Man’s current continuity is the right place to tell it, but there’s a story there. I don’t know when I’ll be able to tell it, but Spider-Man is fine. He doesn’t need a third story. One More Day and One Moment in Time did what was supposed to happen. And no, they don’t get back together and get married“.

Someone from Marvel has to sit down with me for a while and explain why they hate Spider-Man growing up and getting married, when that’s precisely what everyone liked about his Ultimate version. In 2027 it’ll be 20 years since the terrible story, and… maybe it’ll be time to pick it back up and finish it once and for all? Well, Quesada doesn’t think so, claiming that fans secretly love it.

“They look over their shoulder to see if someone from the internet is watching and whisper to you ‘I love that story’. The story frayed nerves, obviously, but it’s something that had to happen to keep Spider-Man’s mythology going for future readers“. Enough already, for God’s sake. Love him a little.
