It’s clear that Marvel Studios is going through one of the worst moments in its history. Since its foundation in 2008 with Iron Man, the studio had an impeccable track record, gaining more and more fans and followers that allowed Marvel to break all cinematic records. However, in recent years, since they expanded their catalog to Disney Plus and concluded the Infinity Saga, things have not been going well for them.

What has been the biggest problem they have faced? Beyond the accusations against Jonathan Majors that prevent his main villain from continuing to play Kang, the conflict dates back much earlier: specifically, since Avengers: Endgame ended. But what exactly happened?

A Series of Unfortunate Events

In the book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,” it is explained what the biggest secret behind Marvel Studios’ recent failures is… and it could be summarized as sheer bad luck. After Avengers: Endgame, with Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow out of the picture, Kevin Feige decided that there would be three other characters leading the studio from that point on. The chosen ones were Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel.

Certainly, the trio seemed perfect at that moment. With Doctor Strange doing his own thing, these three characters could have paved a successful path for the studio… but everything went wrong. The first problem arose when Sony became unhappy with Marvel Studios after Far From Home. Although they renewed the agreement for one more movie (No Way Home), they didn’t like the idea of Marvel Studios relying so much on Tom Holland’s Spidey… leaving his future somewhat uncertain.

The second problem was a significant tragedy. Chadwick Boseman, the actor who portrayed Black Panther, passed away in late August 2020. It was a blow that no one expected and, although they managed it quite well with Letitia Wright, it meant losing another great heroic figure on which to build their future.

The third problem lies with Captain Marvel, who will soon star in The Marvels. Apparently, Brie Larson lost interest in the character of Captain Marvel due to online harassment, leading to a change in her involvement with the studio as well.
