Insomniac targeted the base PS5 performance mode from day one

Insomniac Games says Marvel’s Wolverine will run at 60fps with ray tracing in its default performance mode on a base PlayStation 5, ahead of its September 15, 2026 launch. And from the way the studio tells it, this wasn’t some late push to squeeze more out of the hardware. Senior Project Director Jess Reyner-Reed says the team aimed for that performance target from day one and got there. Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald goes even further, describing Marvel’s Wolverine as a “60 frames per second game with ray tracing,” not a last-minute optimization pass or something saved for a post-launch upgrade.
What that should mean on your end is smoother, quicker combat without having to give up ray tracing. A more linear structure than Marvel’s Spider-Man probably helps. Still, Insomniac hasn’t spelled out the exact balance of upscaling, asset management, streaming, and level design that makes it work, and there’s no full third-party analysis yet.
If you’re hoping for something that doesn’t feel too close to Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Wolverine looks like one to keep an eye on. The combat appears heavier and more brutal. There’s a rage meter , destructible environments, and an original story that includes Jean Grey, Bolivar Trask, Omega Red, and Deathstrike. On top of that, it has New Game Plus, mission replay, whiskey bottle collectibles, and material crates that unlock suits.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches as a PlayStation 5 exclusive on September 15, 2026.
