Meccha Chameleon is June’s big surprise: U.S. game spending drops 21%

Circana has published its June 2026 U.S. video game sales report, and the topline number is rough: spending in the U.S. fell 21% from a year earlier, landing at $4.5 billion for the month. The eye-catching part of the report is Meccha Chameleon. The game climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. software chart by revenue even though it sells for roughly $6, and that’s after reports that it was made by a two-person team in just a few months, with barely any marketing, before reportedly selling millions of copies in the U.S. alone.

It’s not hard to see why Meccha Chameleon took off. The hide-and-seek multiplayer hook is instantly clear, fun to watch, and perfect for streamers and short clips. That kind of setup travels fast, which goes a long way toward explaining how it broke out so quickly.

Hardware got hit the hardest. Spending there dropped 62%, mostly because June 2025 included the record-setting launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. PlayStation 5 hardware revenue also slipped 19%, and software plus services didn’t make up the difference.
