Microsoft Notepad welcomes AI

Microsoft has announced a significant upgrade to one of its most iconic applications: Notepad. As part of the Windows 11 Copilot Plus program, Notepad is being transformed from a simple text editor into a dynamic AI-assisted writing tool. The new feature, called Write, introduces artificial intelligence into the classic app, changing how users interact with text on their devices.

A passive tool becomes an AI-powered assistant

With Write, Notepad now allows users to generate, rewrite, and refine text using natural language prompts. By right-clicking in a document and selecting the Write option, users can engage with a prompt interface powered by Windows Copilot. From there, they can create new content, adjust tone or structure, and even change the length of existing text — all with a few simple instructions.

Expanding AI features across Windows apps

Notepad isn’t alone in this AI evolution. Microsoft Paint is receiving an AI-based sticker generator, which converts text into images, along with new object detection capabilities. Meanwhile, the Snipping Tool now supports intelligent cropping and resizing, automatically adjusting screenshots based on what it identifies as the focus of the image.

A premium AI experience on Copilot Plus PCs

These updates are available exclusively on Copilot Plus PCs running Windows 11 and require users to sign in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft has also introduced a credit-based usage system, though pricing details remain unclear. These changes suggest a shift toward more personalized, cloud-powered user experiences across the entire Windows ecosystem.
