Microsoft rolls out two-step verification

Last week I reported that Microsoft was working on two-step verification for users accounts and today you can enable it. Two-step verification adds a layer of protection to your Microsoft account by requiring a randomly generated code when you sign into a new browser or device. It’s a good idea to enable two-step verification as soon a possible since your Microsoft account controls everything from your Xbox Live account to your Windows 8 login.

Microsoft’s implementation of two-step verification works similarly to systems from Google, Dropbox, and Apple. After enabling two-step verification, you will be required to enter two bits of information when you log in. If your password is compromised, hackers can’t gain access to your account without gaining access to a second account or your phone. Microsoft also offers an Authenticator app for Windows Phones that generates random codes for you to authenticate with.
