Microsoft unveils Gears of War: E-Day Xbox controller for $89.99, out September 30

Microsoft has announced the Gears of War: E-Day Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller. It arrives on September 30, 2026, just ahead of Gears of War: E-Day’s October 6 launch. This is still the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, not any kind of hardware upgrade, so the $89.99 price in the US, £84.99 in the UK, and €89.99 in the Eurozone is really for the custom design, not for extras like Hall effect sticks, rear buttons, adjustable triggers, or Elite-style features.

What you’re actually getting is the presentation. Microsoft says the controller has an “Emergence Day” look, with 3D-molded and laser-etched cracked-asphalt textures, 3D sculpted grips, transparent red buttons and D-pad accents, blacked-out ABXY buttons, and a metallic COG tag on the battery door.

Early reaction makes this sound like one of Microsoft’s best-looking special-edition controllers in years. Still, a lot of players seem to be holding back, because a premium-priced standard controller comes with the same old concerns about wear and tear, plus the possibility of stick drift.

If you’re a Gears collector, this is probably worth picking up. If you want a controller for everyday use, the price is a lot harder to defend.

Microsoft also says a customizable Gears controller with Luke Preece artwork will hit Xbox Design Lab on September 30, alongside a matching 8BitDo Ultimate Charging Dock for $39.99. A broader Gears hardware push is also expected around Gamescom in August 2026. Pre-orders are already open through Xbox channels.
