Stephen King made his debut with Carrie, but it wasn’t an immediate success. Although he published it in 1974, it wasn’t until Brian De Palma adapted it for the screen in 1976 that it became a genuine cultural phenomenon that would end up catapulting him to stardom. And turning the character of Carrie into what she is today. A beloved and widely remembered character with multiple adaptations, none of them as memorable or beloved as the two originals: King’s and De Palma’s.
Now Mike Flanagan is going to make a new version of Carrie as a series for Prime Video, and the first images suggest it’s something very different from what we’re used to. In Prime Video’s own words. “The series expands this fundamental work of popular culture created by King, exploring its characters and conflicts, and showing how everyday decisions that lead to a devastating night, in a gripping and deeply human story about kindness versus cruelty, and about whether we’re witnessing the birth of a heroine, a monster, or something much more complicated”.
An author devoted to King
In any case, it’s not the first time Flanagan has adapted Cronenberg. He’s done so before with Doctor Sleep, The Life of Chuck and Gerald’s Game, having become something of the unofficial go-to adapter of the most famous writer of horror novels working today. But this is the first time he’s tackled one of his major works.
At eight episodes, this version of Carrie won’t take place in the 70s, but in the present day, so poor Carrie will have to face bullying carried out through social media, private chat groups, and memes and viral messages, which will make everything even worse. But to see what telekinesis means for a young woman discovering menstruation in the age of digital bullying we’ll have to wait until next October.
