Unique IDs are coming to Minecraft soon. The latest pre-release of the game tags each player with a unique ID so a player can change his or her name an infinite number of times.

Developer Mojang says name changes was “one of the most requested features since the birth of Minecraft.” Unique IDs will also help players stay white or blacklisted from servers.

Although players can change their names, they won’t be able to take another player’s name. Names are still unique and you will have to wait for a player to change his or her name before you take their old one.

Mojang says it won’t roll out name changing to everyone until they feel enough people are using Minecraft 1.8 or higher. Doing this gives people running servers enough time to prepare for the change.
