LINE has announced three upcoming services to its free messaging and call app. Video calls, music and LINE Mall, for in-app shopping.
Music will be integrated into LINE. Little was said about which record labels will be on board at launch, but the company intends the service to be worldwide. This is ambitious, having seen the difficulties Spotify, Pandora and even Google and Apple have had in negotiating worldwide music deals.
Video Calling is the most obvious new feature. Other apps like Skype and Viber already have video calls, so really it’s just LINE playing catch-up. Nevertheless, it will make LINE a very complete communication app, and is sure to be popular.
LINE Mall is the most mysterious of the three. At LINE’s press conference, Mall was described as a a new shopping experience on LINE, where you could buy or sell anything you want. Is LINE taking on eBay?
