NASA’s Roman telescope is set for 2026: it could become a powerful asteroid hunter

NASA says the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the agency’s next flagship infrared space observatory, is on track to launch on August 30, 2026. Alongside its main science goals, it may also help spot and evaluate near-Earth asteroids that could threaten Earth.

From the Sun-Earth L2 point, 1.5 million kilometers away, Roman will have a 2.4-meter mirror, infrared vision, and the Wide Field Instrument. NASA says that instrument covers about 100 times the field of view of the Hubble Space Telescope. Put together, those capabilities should let the mission scan large areas over and over, pick up faint moving streaks, and, in NASA mission simulations, improve some orbit measurements by two to three orders of magnitude. It still wouldn’t replace dedicated asteroid surveys.

NASA also says Roman’s high-resolution near-infrared data could help researchers estimate an asteroid’s size, shape, rotation, and composition. Those are the details that matter when you’re trying to judge impact energy, figure out how an object is put together, and think through possible mitigation.

If you follow planetary defense, this extra job for Roman is something to watch. It could be especially useful as a follow-up instrument, taking a dim point of light and turning it into a much better physical profile while also tightening trajectory forecasts after the Vera C. Rubin Observatory finds objects in visible light and NASA’s NEO Surveyor flags dark ones in the mid-infrared.

NASA and the European Space Agency place Roman inside NASA’s broader impact-monitoring effort, backed by the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, the early-warning lesson from DART, and European Space Agency support through coronagraph detectors and a data-downlink ground station.
