Neil Druckmann does not close the door to a third The Last of Us, and he already has plans for what it would be like

Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us, has not completely closed the door on a possible third game in this acclaimed universe, but he notes that he needs a vision that satisfies him before moving forward. Although Ellie’s narrative could conclude with the second installment, Druckmann has expressed his interest in exploring new directions that expand the original story.

A game with a new layer

In a recent talk, Gabriel Betancourt, former lighting artist at Naughty Dog, revealed that Druckmann has hinted that “several people are immune” to the cordyceps fungus infection, which opens the door to the possibility of meeting more characters with this trait in a hypothetical sequel. Betancourt added that Druckmann wants to tell “a more sophisticated story” involving multiple characters, which could alter the perspective of previous games.

This new direction proposed by Druckmann raises questions about the impact it would have on the legacy of the two previous video games. If more immune characters are introduced, the uniqueness of Ellie and her story could be diluted, which would lead to a more complex retrospective evaluation of the previous content. It would be a risky move, considering that the original creators, like Bruce Straley, did not contemplate that possibility when developing the first game.

The gaming community is divided: some long for more of the world they have come to love, while others are skeptical that the inclusion of new immune characters can maintain the rich and emotional narrative that has characterized the series. However, these statements from Betancourt suggest that the universe of The Last of Us still has much to offer, and with a renewed focus, it could surprise both fans and critics.
