'Neon Genesis Evangelion' has a new ending, and fans haven't liked it

In 2025, Neon Genesis Evangelion turned 30 years old, a milestone that marks its influence in the anime industry and its status as one of the most significant franchises. To celebrate this anniversary, a special event was held in Japan that left fans with mixed feelings, as, in addition to announcing a new series, an animated short focused on one of the most iconic characters was presented: Asuka Langley.

Asuka… Happy?

The short, which was written and supervised by Hideaki Anno, reinterprets the ending of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time and presents an alternative vision of the future, suggesting that Shinji and Asuka are married and have a daughter. This twist has sparked extensive debate among fans, some of whom interpret this narrative as a desire of Asuka rather than an objective reality. Anno has not provided clarifications, allowing various interpretations to flourish within the community.

Additionally, it has been confirmed that work is underway on a new series of Neon Genesis Evangelion that will feature a script by Yoko Taro, renowned for his work on NieR: Automata. The direction will be handled by Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toko Yatabe, two veterans of the franchise, who have also participated in acclaimed projects such as Chainsaw Man and Little Witch Academia. The music will be composed by Keiichi Okabe and the animation will be managed by Studio Khara and CloverWorks.

Despite its three decades of history, the Neon Genesis Evangelion saga remains more alive than ever, promising to expand its universe and offer new stories that will resonate with both old and new fans. With expectations rising, followers eagerly await more details about this new series and its future implications in the world of anime.
