Netflix announces Steps: a Cinderella rewrite for 2026

Netflix says Steps, a new standalone animated movie coming in 2026, is taking Cinderella somewhere a little different. This time, the story follows the “not-so-evil” stepsisters instead of giving us another straight retelling.

The movie centers on Lilith, voiced by Ali Wong, who’s trying to find some magic after Cinderella’s transformation. Along the way, she accidentally turns her sister Margot, voiced by Stephanie Hsu, into a frog and winds up having to team up with Cinderella, played by Amanda Seyfried. Netflix also says the cast includes Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother and Nikki Glaser as Priscilla, with a Kris Bowers score recorded at Abbey Road.

Co-directors Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Amy Poehler producing, seem to be going for a heroine who feels more sympathetic and a lot messier emotionally. Netflix describes the story as one shaped by rejection, jealousy, and insecurity, with visuals influenced by Rococo art and Cendrillon, along with older Chinese and Italian Cinderella variations, plus broader female representation that moves past rigid beauty standards.

If you like Netflix’s darker fairy-tale revisions, like The Grimm Variations and A Tale Dark & Grimm, this looks like one to keep an eye on. You’ll be able to watch Steps on Netflix in 2026.
