Netflix continues to work hard at breaking into the gaming sphere with a new announcement about Exploding Kittens. It’s been slow going for the platform, but they’re starting to make some headway. We’re used to the platform releasing games based on exclusive series, such as the Stranger Things game they released based on the popular series. However, Netflix recently made a surprise announcement.
On Monday, Netflix announced that they are working on a new mobile game for Android and iOS based on the popular card game, Exploding Kittens. Alongside the release of this mobile game, they will also be releasing an animated series. As announced by the company, the plan is to eventually start releasing new cards in the game based on what’s happening in the series.
While there is already an existing Exploding Kittens mobile game that can be purchased from the app store, this one is a completely separate title. While the gameplay remains very similar, this new one will start with two brand new cards and introduce new cards alongside the series. This mobile game will also be included if you have an active Netflix subscription – so there is no need to pay extra.
The developers at Netflix are excited to test out this new model of releasing a game and series alongside one another. While the platform has done something similar in the past with titles like Stranger Things, this time, it’s different. With Stranger Things, games were released based on the series, this time; it’s the other way around. The animated Exploding Kittens series will be based on the game, not the other way around.
The developers at Netflix hope that this will not just lure new gamers to the platform but also new clients as a whole. Their goal is to provide quality content in any format that their clients enjoy, whether a series or a game.
The Exploding Kittens game will launch in May, while the series will only be released in 2023. The game is a standalone title, meaning that if you played the previous Exploding Kittens mobile game, you’d not be able to sync progress between the two. We look forward to seeing how this new project progresses as well as the new Netflix rating system for movies.
