Netflix iconNetflix is getting into the social game by partnering with Facebook. Today, the company announced that it would be implementing Facebook Connect on its site so users can now share what they’re watching with their friends. This feature is currently only available to subscribers in the United States.

Netflix is treading carefully with its social sharing. By default, sharing will only happen on Netflix so you can see what’s been watched by your friends and how they’ve rated movies. There will be a new section called “Friends’ Favorites” to highlight these movies.

There is a good amount of control over how and what you share on Netflix and Facebook. When a video starts playing, the interface overlay will display a button that read, “Don’t Share This.” If you’ve shared something by accident or forgot to disable sharing for that particular video, you can go back and un-share. Of course, users can opt out of sharing altogether or avoid connecting with Facebook.

This is either a brilliant move by Netflix to help improve its recommendation engine or it could scare and frustrate users. For now, it seems that Netflix has enough privacy controls to keep users happy, but there’s always a risk that people over share on Facebook.

The new sharing features will be rolling out slowly during the course of the week to all US subscribers. Check out the video below to see how it all works.
