Netflix is preparing a series about the tumultuous life of Frida Kahlo

Netflix has confirmed the development of a new fictional series centered on the life and work of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her husband, the also renowned artist Diego Rivera. This production promises to offer a deep look into the complex relationship between the two, exploring their ups and downs, betrayals, and the creative process of the couple in a context marked by the political and social tensions of their time.

Illness, art, social struggle, love and heartbreak

The series, which is in the early stages of production, will be directed by Patricia Riggen, known for her work in films like La misma luna and The 33, as well as by Gabriel Ripstein, a renowned director and screenwriter who brings his experience to the project. Together, they aim to portray not only the personal lives of Kahlo and Rivera but also their influence on the art and culture of Mexico during the turbulent years of the 20th century.

Frida Kahlo, transformed into a feminist symbol and a cultural icon, is famous for her emotional and vibrant works that explore her identity, suffering, and the female experience. On the other hand, Diego Rivera, a prominent muralist, was a key figure in the Mexican muralist movement and had a profound impact on the cultural politics of his time. The relationship between both artists was tumultuous, marked by passion and infidelity, as we have seen in other adaptations.

With the growing production of content about historical and cultural figures on streaming platforms, this new Netflix project joins a trend where history and art are at the center of contemporary entertainment.
