For years, Apple has been synonymous with innovation, not only in technology but also in design. Cases and accessories play a crucial role in the use of devices, and Apple has always chosen the best materials, options, and designs for them. A prime example of this is the iconic leather cases that the company has offered for its iPhones for years. However, times change, and it seems that Apple is ready to bid farewell to the traditional leather case in favor of something entirely new and, essentially, more sustainable.

A new premium and sustainable material

Recently, rumors emerged that Apple had no plans to release leather cases for its upcoming iPhone 15 series. At that time, there was no viable replacement, and it was unknown whether we would see an alternative option to the silicon cases that have been performing so well among iPhone users.

Now, these rumors have not only been reinforced but also a quite surprising style change for iPhone cases starting with the iPhone 15 has been revealed. As reported by 9to5mac, several sources indicate that Apple is considering a woven design to replace the leather.

The main reason for this change is environmental and sustainability considerations in the manufacturing of the successful accessory. But what can we expect from this new case? According to recent leaks on platforms like Weibo and Twitter, the iPhone 15 is expected to come with a woven design case. UnclePan, a leaker with an established track record—though not very lengthy—referred to this new option as a “woven case”. Other leakers like DuanRui and MajinBu supported this information.

While the images circulating on the web don’t represent the official colors that Apple will offer, the texture we can infer from the leaked images is undoubtedly quite intriguing. MajinBu commented that the cases are made from a “faux leather” material, with some supply chain sources referring to them as “environmental protection Magsafe fabric case”.

Apple’s choice to move away from genuine leather might have surprised many, but it makes sense in the context where sustainability and environmental protection have been priorities for the company for years. Leather, despite its premium aesthetic and feel, has a significant environmental impact in terms of resources used and dyeing processes. By adopting alternative materials, Apple not only strengthens its commitment to the environment but also aligns with current consumer expectations.

On the horizon of the iPhone 15, changes are not only seen in cases. It’s rumored that there will also be braided charging cables, suggesting that Apple is reimagining various accessories. This new woven design, while representing a drastic change, could offer—according to the leaks—a different, perhaps even better tactile experience than leather, combining durability with aesthetics.

Just two weeks away from Apple’s official announcement, the entire community is eagerly awaiting to see what else Cupertino has in store. Even though Apple’s leather case might disappear, its replacement promises to be an equally if not more attractive proposition. And that won’t be the only change. We’ll see more colors to choose from, new materials, and several other surprises because, even though we think we know everything about the new iPhone 15, Apple always has a few tricks up its sleeve.
