Rob Carr, former audio engineer at Rockstar Games, has shared his thoughts on the challenges facing the video game industry today, especially in the context of a growing number of layoffs and studio closures. In an interview with Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, Carr, who worked on well-known titles like GTA 5, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption, revealed that despite his 20 years of experience, the competition for jobs is fierce. “It’s hard to get a job when there are thousands of people in the same situation,” he commented. He stated that his extensive background no longer guarantees a competitive edge as it once did.

The labor situation in video games is terrible

During the pandemic, the video game industry experienced notable financial growth. However, that demand has fallen since then, which has led well-known companies like Ubisoft to admit that they launched too many projects anticipating an interest that did not materialize. According to Ubisoft’s CEO, this has prompted a reconsideration of their business approach in an increasingly uncertain environment.

On the other hand, the production of GTA 6 seems to be progressing by leaps and bounds, with reports suggesting that Rockstar has almost completely rebuilt the Rage engine for the development of the game. This laborious endeavor may reflect the company’s ambition to provide an even more innovative and expansive experience for players.

In response to the challenges in large companies, Carr has decided to shift towards independent development, working on his own game titled Nyrkkipoyta and writing on his blog Audio Expat. This transition suggests that many professionals are reevaluating their career paths in the sector in light of an uncertain job market.
