During the lunar flyby of the Artemis II mission, Commander Reid Wiseman captured an impressive photograph of the Moon’s surface using an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

This milestone not only highlights the technological advancement of smartphones but also represents the first time NASA allows its astronauts to fly with the latest mobile devices.

Moon Shot, by Reid Wiseman: a new era of mobile photography in space

The Artemis II crew has been using a total of four iPhones 17 Pro Max, as well as additional cameras like a GoPro HERO 4 Black and two Nikon models, the D5 and the Z 9, to document their unique experience in space.

During a live broadcast, while NASA staff commented on the flight, Wiseman showed his photograph to the camera, revealing an image that highlights the Chebyshev crater. This display of photographic capabilities occurred just as the crew had turned off the cabin lights to enhance the quality of the images.

Wiseman confirmed during the broadcast that he had taken the photo using an 8x zoom, which demonstrates the advanced capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro Max in spatial lighting conditions.

In addition to sharing their enthusiasm for photography, Wiseman and the rest of the crew were carrying out post-lunar flyby activities, including sending the images taken back to Earth.

The stored photographs will be published on NASA’s Flickr account once they are processed, allowing the public to enjoy high-quality images of the journey. At this time, the team is expected to complete the image sharing, although it has not yet been confirmed whether the famous photo of Wiseman will be part of that set.

With this innovative use of mobile technology in space, the Artemis II mission not only reaffirms the astronauts’ ability to capture memorable moments, but also suggests a future where smartphones could play an important role in space exploration.
