NVIDIA DLSS 5 is out: webcam mods spark backlash

NVIDIA rolled out DLSS 5 today, September 3, 2026. It’s the newest version of its Deep Learning Super Sampling tech, and it brings what the company calls “3D-Guided Neural Rendering,” meant to adjust lighting and materials in games in real time for a more photorealistic image. The release is also hitting in the middle of a backlash over what it does to art direction, plus leaked tests that appeared to apply similar changes to real people live.

Within hours, leaked pre-release webcam tests were already making the rounds, and they seemed to show visual changes being applied to real people in live video. That only pushed the backlash further. Complaints had been building since DLSS 5’s spring reveal, when gamers and artists started calling the look “slop” for flattening art direction, softening facial features, and making scenes feel synthetic.

NVIDIA says DLSS 5 works from motion-vector data at the geometry-control level rather than as a simple overlay. Jensen Huang, who runs NVIDIA, says critics are “completely wrong” because developers still control the effect. Still, it’s easy to see why opponents keep pushing back when a single idealized look starts to resemble the beauty filters already tied to body-image issues and Snapchat dysmorphia.

If you care as much about authorship as you do about frame rates, keep an eye on this launch: NVIDIA’s own figures point to a 50% to 60% hit, even with fivefold gains in development efficiency and support for one NVIDIA RTX 50-series GPU instead of two.

DLSS 5 will first show up officially in NBA 2K27 on NVIDIA RTX 50-series hardware, while the rules around live non-malicious or non-consensual appearance manipulation are still murky.
