Yesterday’s Google Maps update for Android brought lots of cool changes to the app, but removed the ability to make map areas available offline. This was a popular feature, and many users were angry about its removal. Well, Google has listened, and added a ‘Make this map area available offline‘ button to the app.

It’s not exactly the offline mode that many people want. You can’t store multiple locations or large areas, but that may return in a later update. Google has clearly pushed out this small update as quickly as it could.

The quick update also adds a “Where’s Latitude?’ link on the side menu, which explains ‘the future of location sharing’, as Latitude was closed on July 9th. Google Navigation has also been expanded to 19 more countries, including Guatemala, Paru and Taiwan.

There is no concrete date for the next Google Maps update for on iOS. Google has announced that the next version will only be compatible with iOS 6 and above when available.
