One Night Only cuts extensive nudity: Will Gluck cites audience data

One Night Only director Will Gluck says he took nudity out of One Night Only after test screenings, along with pages and pages of audience data, suggested moviegoers are less comfortable with it in a theater full of other people.

Gluck says the real issue is the setting: sex has migrated to the private screens people use on phones, tablets, and laptops, so a scene that feels fine at home can get awkward fast in a packed auditorium.

That broader change shows up in Stephen Follows’ data too. Sex and nudity in the 250 top-grossing U.S. films fell by nearly 40% from 2000 to 2023, while the share of films with none went from under 20% to almost 50%.

Studio decisions line up with that. A 2024 Talker Research poll found that 43% of Gen Z viewers had quit a movie over a graphic sex scene, the highest rate in the survey, and nearly half of viewers said those scenes are often unnecessary, which affects what gets shot, what gets cut, and how films are marketed.

Put Gluck’s view inside a post-#MeToo Hollywood, where intimacy coordinators are now standard and content gets trimmed for ratings boards and censors, and the picture gets clearer: critics say audiences aren’t rejecting nudity itself so much as scenes that feel gratuitous, clumsy, or disconnected, and they also point out the irony of a film about legalized premarital sex showing relatively little.
