The wait is almost over for fans of literary dystopias, as Disney+ will premiere the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, titled The Testaments, on April 8, 2026.
This series is based on the eponymous novel by Margaret Atwood, published in 2019 and winner of the Booker Prize, which explores the future Republic of Gilead 15 years after the events of the original work.
Get ready for The Testaments: Disney+ presents the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ was adapted for television in 2017, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon. The series, which has six seasons and 66 episodes available on HBO Max, tells the story of June, known as Offred, who lives under a totalitarian regime that has overthrown the U.S. government and forces women to bear children for the elites of Gilead.
In ‘The Testaments’, the narrative is enriched with new characters, such as Agnes, June’s daughter renamed in this version, and Daisy, a character from Canada.
The return of Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, the authority figure who disciplined the Handmaids, adds a familiar touch for fans of the original series. Although Elisabeth Moss’s participation as June has not been confirmed yet, her role as an executive producer suggests a possible connection to the plot that fans are eagerly anticipating.
This sequel not only promises an exciting continuation but also raises questions about the future of society and resistance in an oppressive environment. The adaptation will be set three to four years after the events of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and while it is expected to follow the line of its original material, some creative changes are anticipated. With the new series, fans are about to have a renewed immersion in the unsettling world of Gilead.
