It is clear that horror and video games go very well together. From big franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill to independent games like Amnesia or The Medium, consoles have titles for all types of audiences. However, with so many options available, few manage to stand out from the rest, and one of those that has achieved it the most in recent years is Until Dawn.
The PlayStation 4 video game became a huge phenomenon in 2015, and even won a BAFTA Games Award for Best Original Property. Now, the Supermassive Games title will be turned into a movie by David F. Sandberg, director of films like Annabelle: Creation and Shazam! But what can we expect from this film?
A love letter to the slasher
In Until Dawn we take on the role of a group of eight young people who are going to spend a winter vacation together in a mountain far from civilization, in Blackwood Pines. However, things soon get very dark and, like in any good slasher film, they start dying one by one.
The best thing about the video game is that the deaths depended, literally, on you as a player. You could choose the path that each character took at every moment, so if someone died it was because of what you had decided before. Obviously, we won’t be able to see this in the movie, but I’m sure the experience will be similar.
Behind the script of the film is Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter of It, Annabelle, and The Nun, so they are not messing around with what they are preparing. For now, we only have some details about the movie that have come from its producer: Screen Gems. From what we know, it will be a movie for adults over 18 years old —they won’t pull a Five Nights at Freddy’s, no— and it will be a love letter to the horror genre, specifically to the slasher genre. Interestingly, Rami Malek appeared in Until Dawn before becoming ultra-famous, will he repeat his role?
