One Piece is a manga that draws attention for its good work with villains. Far from killing them all as other manga like Naruto do, or turning them into good guys as they do in Dragon Ball, Eiichiro Oda’s story plays more with the grays and his characters are rarely removed from the story.

That’s why someone like Donquixote Doflamingo, one of the best villains the manga has ever had and who antagonized the famous Dressrosa arc, had to go his own way after dealing with the Straw Hats. The character has continued to have small appearances throughout the manga, and while he doesn’t seem to be as prominent again, it’s clear that he still has quite a bit left to say in the series.

Donquixote Doflamingo is also the most perverse villain -with Blackbeard’s permission- in One Piece. He has not been seen to show kindness practically ever, and everything has always been done for his own benefit. However, in the latest issue of One Piece this has changed… as we have finally seen the human side of the villain.

Doflamingo helps a birdie

On the cover of chapter 1083, Eiichiro Oda has carried out a common practice: drawing a cover with a scene proposed by the fans. This has led us to iconic images featuring our favorite characters, but rarely has he left room for Donquixote Doflamingo.

In this issue, it’s the villain who heads the cover. Doflamingo is sitting in a tree, where a bird has fallen and made a bump. The pirate leaves him his jacket as a nest, and also holds a band-aid to put on his head. It is an unusual image, but it shows that he also has a little heart.

It is not clear whether the special covers, such as the one for chapter 1083, are part of the canon or not. Nevertheless, it is curious to imagine Doflamingo thinking of a helpless creature instead of, for once, himself.
