Microsoft’s note-taking app is coming to Mac for free this month, according to sources speaking to The Verge. The company is facing pressure from free productivity apps like Google Drive and Evernote.

Up until now, OneNote was only available on Windows, iOS, and Android. OneNote was always bundled with the paid Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft is allegedly making the Windows version free as well.

By separating OneNote from Office, Microsoft can entice users with a free version. OneNote users may find Microsoft’s Office ecosystem compelling after using the note-taking app. There will also be a OneNote web clipper extension that will be available for browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. The extension helps users import text, photos, and more into OneNote.

Competition between productivity apps is fierce. Just yesterday, Google announced add-ons for Google Docs and Sheets, closing the feature gap between Drive and Office.

News about OneNote coming to Mac makes sense as the company also confirmed that Office for Mac 2014 is coming out this year. Office for iPad is expected to debut in the coming weeks as well. Microsoft is smart to bring Office to as many platforms as possible but needs to offer more compelling features than the competition.
