With September 4 coming up fast, Capcom says Onimusha: Way of the Sword has passed 2 million wishlists across all platforms. That puts the publisher’s 2026 revival on track to rank among its biggest launches.
That number carries extra weight when you remember what this game is. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first brand-new mainline Onimusha in 20 years, and Capcom has already pulled the release date forward from September 25 to September 4. You don’t move a game up like that unless you feel good about where it stands, especially for a series that has spent most of the past two decades quiet after its PS2 run of samurai combat, supernatural horror, and big cinematic action.
Capcom is framing Way of the Sword as a soft reboot, which should make it easy to jump in without homework, while still keeping the things people associate with Onimusha: the Oni Gauntlet, soul absorption, Edo-period Kyoto, Miyamoto Musashi, and a lead character modeled on Toshiro Mifune.
If you’ve been waiting for Onimusha to come back in a modern form, this one looks like it may be worth picking up at launch. Early hands-on previews have pointed to duels that are tough without feeling unreadable, plus a slower, more deliberate cinematic rhythm that some people have compared to Sekiro. Capcom, for its part, says isn’t a Soulslike and isn’t an open-world game either.
You’ll be able to play Onimusha: Way of the Sword on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam. Capcom has also been steadily building toward release with trailers, a public demo, Weekly Oni Memos, and PlayStation marketing support.
