OpenAI has opened its wallet. Last week, the company behind ChatGPT announced the acquisition of Rockset, a startup specializing in database analysis and search. Yesterday, sources close to OpenAI confirmed to VentureBeat the acquisition of Multi, formerly known as Remotion, a small startup focused on remote collaboration technologies for Mac users.
Alexander Embiricos, co-founder and CEO of Multi, announced on his Twitter account that he and his team will be joining OpenAI’s “ChatGPT Desktop team,” the unit responsible for creating the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac introduced in May of this year. “Lately, we have been increasingly wondering how we should work with computers. Not just computers, but real computers. With AI. We believe it is one of the most important product questions of our time. That’s why we are so excited to announce that Multi is joining OpenAI,” said Embiricos.
After the news was released, many Twitter users speculated about the possibility of OpenAI using Multi to allow their AI models, such as GPT-4, to “take control” of a user’s computer and perform actions on their behalf based on text or voice commands. This could enable users to ask ChatGPT to perform tasks such as creating a spreadsheet with their work hours and sending it to their boss.

Despite these speculations, it is most likely that the acquisition aims to improve and add features to the ChatGPT Team and Enterprise subscription plans, focused on providing collaborative technology to work teams.
The Multi app will stop working on July 24, 2024, and all user data will be deleted. Multi has stated in an FAQ that users should export their data before that date. Additionally, they have offered the possibility to request an extension by sending an email to alexander@multi.app, and they have committed to recommending alternatives to users who request it.
