OpenAI’s first device may be a rechargeable speaker: a screenless ChatGPT companion

OpenAI looks to be working on its first hardware device. The reports describe a rechargeable, screenless speaker built around ChatGPT, GPT-Live voice chat, and a home experience that feels more conversational.

If the reporting holds, this would be a portable, speaker-like OpenAI device with no display. The point seems to be building for whatever comes after the smartphone, not releasing another accessory that just rides on Apple or Google platforms. It may also include a camera, other sensors, and even slight mechanical movement so it can follow context, seem more present, and answer in a way that feels more lifelike. That also brings up the obvious privacy problem for a device that could always be listening, or watching.

The project is reportedly linked to Jony Ive, LoveFrom, and OpenAI’s reported $6.5 billion io Products deal. There are real risks, though. Humane’s Ai Pin already showed how difficult it is to sell new AI hardware, demand for always-on companion devices still hasn’t been proven, and Apple’s trade-secret lawsuit could make development messier.

If you want a dedicated AI device, not just another smart speaker, this is worth keeping an eye on.

There’s nothing to download yet. Current reporting points to a 2026 unveiling, a 2027 release, and a price somewhere between $200 and $300.
