Prime Video adds *The Amateur*: Rami Malek’s spy thriller is now streaming

Prime Video has added The Amateur, the 2025 spy thriller with Rami Malek as CIA cryptographer Charlie Heller, which puts the movie in front of a much bigger crowd after its earlier stretch on Hulu and Disney+. The Bourne comparison comes pretty naturally.

Malek plays Heller as a man dragged into a revenge mission after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. But he isn’t Jason Bourne. He gets by on technical skill, careful planning, surveillance, cyber know-how, and tradecraft, not sheer force, which gives James Hawes’s adaptation of Robert Littell’s 1981 novel a more cerebral edge, with a clear “revenge of the nerd” streak running through it.

The movie opened in theaters in April 2025, landed on digital in June, and pulled in about $96 million worldwide against a $60 million budget. Streaming gave it a real second life, too, with a reported 310 million minutes watched in its first week across Hulu and Disney+.

Reviews landed somewhere in the middle. The Amateur sits at 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, where critics singled out Malek and the smarter, more character-focused approach, while also knocking the formula-heavy plotting and lighter action. Audiences were far more enthusiastic, pushing it to 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, with help from a supporting cast that includes Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, and Caitríona Balfe.

If moody espionage thrillers are your thing, and you want something that sits close to Bourne without feeling like a copy, this one’s an easy pick, even if the sequel chatter from director James Hawes and star Rami Malek is still unofficial.
