The highly anticipated film Project Salvation, based on the novel of the same name by author Andy Weir, known for Mars, will hit theaters on March 20. The movie, directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, has generated great anticipation and received positive reactions in its early screenings.

Miller has clarified that, although the film does not use green screens, this does not imply the absence of visual effects. According to the director, the goal was always to prioritize sets and practical effects, having built the interior of the spaceship where most of the action takes place. “There are no green screens, but there are thousands of effects in the movie”, Miller commented on social media.

The director added that in certain scenes, such as when the protagonist Ryan Gosling is outside the ship, a black background and a background of changing tones were used to reflect the light more authentically. The digital creation of the space exteriors and the ship shots was carried out by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), while the alien character Rocky was created using a combination of puppetry techniques and animation by Framestore.

Gosling plays Ryland Grace, who wakes up on an empty ship without remembering how he got there or what his mission is. His space loneliness is interrupted when he encounters Rocky, an alien in a similar situation. This blend of human drama and science fiction elements aligns with the distinctive style of Miller and Lord, known for their work on The LEGO Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

With an intriguing narrative and an innovative approach to visual effects, Project Salvation promises to be an exciting addition to the science fiction film offerings. As the release date approaches, the expectations of the audience and critics continue to rise.
